Is this training for you?

Our training is designed to teach scientists and clinicians from academia, industry, and government how to efficiently and effectively develop, lead, and support trainees, interns and employees on diverse teams by intentionally building transparent and productive working relationships.

If you have evaluative authority over others in the lab or workplace (either now or in the future) and are responsible for managing their productivity, morale, or well-being, then this training is designed for you. This includes evaluating another person's performance and/or conduct, setting expectations, teaching/training, delegating responsibilities, providing feedback, and/or managing conflict.

Discover what's distinctive about our training!

  • Academic Focused: First Designed for Scientists and Clinicians in Research Mentor Roles: Are you an academic scientist juggling managing and mentoring responsibilities of your staff and trainees? Our first NSF-funded training program was meticulously designed to equip all scientists with research mentor responsibilities - including PIs, postdocs, and students - with the people management skills essential to mentor and/or supervise the productivity, morale, and well-being of every member of your lab.

  • Industry Focused: Retooled to Also Train Scientists and Clinicians Managing Teams in Industry Sectors: In collaboration with California Life Sciences, the leading professional association for the California biotech industry, our second NSF grant built out our training to also include industry-specific examples, case studies and tools to train PhDs and MDs intending to take on industry team leader roles. Scientists and clinicians from over 100 biotech companies have embraced and positively responded to our program, making it a versatile choice for scientists navigating academic and industry landscapes. • Practical and Comprehensive Supervisory Skills: Our no-nonsense methodology teaches scientists and clinicians "people manager" skills. We focus on introducing and applying frameworks to engage in the 7 core supervisory skills, including the "big 3" people manager skills (setting expectations, teaching/training and delegating, and giving feedback). We also cover crucial strategies for navigating everyday supervisory situations, such as how to skillfully respond when someone isn't meeting your expectations, managing diverse work style preferences/teams, offering support and protection while maintaining appropriate boundaries to prevent burnout, and change management basics every people manager needs to introduce these new frameworks, tools, and approaches into your lab/team. Elevate your leadership capabilities and foster a positive, productive work environment with our targeted training approach.

  • Professional Development for Individual Lab Members and Entire Teams: Our training isn't just for individual scientists and clinicians; it's a dynamic experience designed to enhance the collective capabilities of entire labs or teams. Through our training, both teams of supervisors/individual contributors and faculty/postdocs/students alike can benefit from adopting common evidence-based inclusive frameworks, tools, language, and strategies, fostering a shared culture and team norms. Strengthen your lab/team's cohesion and effectiveness through our training solutions, which we can tailor to align with your current HR/organizational values and practices. We can also organize group training with population-specific breakout rooms/small groups (e.g., faculty only, trainee-only, or team-leaders only, individual contributor/reports-only, etc. small group discussions), to offer similar members of your team the opportunity to discuss, brainstorm and strategize with psychological safety.

Our training is designed to be a professional development opportunity for your lab or team (serving current and future people managers/research mentors). It has proven relevant to individuals managing scientific teams in academia or industry.
