Presented by OCPD, our SOM Career Peers, and First Gen Student Services, the "What I Wish I Had Known" panel series offers a unique chance for all medical students to gain insights from their senior peers. In this session, you'll uncover hidden knowledge and learn effective strategies and frameworks for finding mentors, preparing for clerkships, choosing specialties, and other key topics, all based on real questions from MS1/2s like you.

Have you heard that you should create a LinkedIn profile, and wondered why? Do you have a half-finished profile hanging around? Does the prospect of creating a profile from scratch sound daunting (but maybe a little less daunting if there’s free food)? If any of the above sound familiar, this event is for you.  
 
We at OCPD believe tools like LinkedIn are incredibly useful for expanding your network and landing career opportunities. But we also believe you can benefit from these tools just by creating a simple profile that requires a minimum of time and effort. With just a few clicks, you can also use your LinkedIn profile to join UCSF Connect, a platform for connecting with UCSF alums.  
 
OCPD career counselors and peer advisors will provide essential tips for creating a profile, and be on hand to support you as you actually work on your own (over lunch). Don’t let this important item slide off your to-do list – come join us and knock it out!
 
What you’ll learn:

By the end of this session, you will have created or updated a professional profile (such as a LinkedIn and/or UCSF page). You’ll know how to:
•    Describe the purpose of having a LinkedIn profile
•    Identify the true profile “must-haves”
•    Write a headline and summary
•    Find and connect with UCSF alums who could serve as career mentors
 
Format:

Drop in anytime on either day, and stay as long as you like! Attendance throughout the full 90 minutes is not required.
 
We’ll have resources and a brief presentation covering the true LinkedIn profile “must-haves,” and will support you with your individual questions as you use this dedicated time to work on your own profile over lunch.

Most of us find it daunting to reach out to a stranger; but most potential mentors start as people you don’t know yet. Whether you’re choosing a thesis lab, seeking research collaborators, exploring careers, or applying for jobs, “coffee chats” (also known as “informational interviews”) are an essential way to find mentors and opportunities.

Fortunately, there’s a straightforward protocol you can follow. We’ll walk you through how to contact people, ask to talk, and use a 30-minute conversation as the foundation for future mentorship and opportunities. We’ll provide templates, examples, and an opportunity to troubleshoot your first “invitation to connect.” You’ll also hear from a student leader about their experience with some common challenges of conducting coffee chats.

What you’ll learn:
 
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

• Describe the protocol for setting up a coffee chat with a potential mentor
• Write an “invitation to connect” that is likely to get a positive response
• Prepare questions for an informational interview
• Identify steps you can take to ensure a productive conversation

Format:

This workshop will take place on Zoom.

11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Learn and Reflect

• No active participation is required for this part of the event. You will be invited to reflect individually and to respond to questions in the chat.

12-12:30 p.m.: Apply and Practice

• In this part of the workshop, you'll apply what you learned, via activities including breakout rooms. Participants who prefer not to participate in breakout rooms may leave at 12 p.m., or complete an individual reflection activity instead.

Optional follow-up lunch and learn on creating a LinkedIn profile will be held in-person at Mission Bay on January 30.

In this workshop you will lay the groundwork for your thesis lab choice by self-assessing your PhD goals and characteristics of environments in which you have felt engaged. You will receive multiple tools for evaluating your rotation labs and you’ll get started using them in the workshop. You’ll have time for individual reflection as well-structured opportunities to work with your fellow first-years to identify important but hard-to-spot scenarios that may have occurred in your rotations. You’ll also hear from a student leader about their experience with some common challenges of choosing a thesis lab.  

Attend this workshop if you’re looking for structure and community around this important mentorship decision!  

What you'll learn:

• Describe what you are looking for in a thesis lab
• Organize your thoughts about your rotations so far
• Evaluate your rotation labs according to your goals
• Identify important scenarios to look out for in your rotations

Format:
This workshop will take place on Zoom. Optional follow-up office hours will be held in-person at Mission Bay the following day.

• (All participants) You will be guided through a self-assessment using a shared Google Sheet where each participant will have space to write and reflect.

The Choosing a Thesis Lab workshop will be followed the next day by in-person Office Hours at Mission Bay. OCPD’s Researcher Team – Drs. Ray Care, Linda Louie, and David Blancha – will be joined by senior students from our Career and Professional Development Leadership Internship to answer your questions on the topic of choosing a thesis lab. We look forward to meeting you in person!
