Teaching at USF

UCSF-USF partnership

OCPD and University of San Francisco (USF) partner to offer UCSF students and postdoctoral scholars opportunities in the life sciences to teach undergraduate lab and lecture courses at USF in the departments of Biology, Physics/Astronomy, Mathematics and Statistics, and Chemistry.

Overview

  • These teaching positions are paid adjunct faculty positions which often include a weekly instructor's meeting.
  • The majority of part-time teaching positions are for laboratory sections associated with large intro classes taught by full-time USF faculty.
  • There are occasional opportunities for teaching full courses (either lecture only, or lecture/lab) at both lower- and upper-division levels.

Applying

Application materials

  1. Cover letter addressed to Deneb Karentz or Janet Yang (see application instructions). The cover letter should include an explanation of your qualifications to teach the courses you are applying for.
  2. A separate page (with your name at the top) listing the courses and specific section times you would like to be considered for, in order of preference (if any)
  3. Your CV, with a “Teaching Experience” section, if applicable
  4. List of three references with an indication of your relationship and complete contact information, including the person’s position, phone and e-mail. (Do not submit reference letters, but please let your references know that they may be contacted about your application.)
  5. International scholars on a J1 visa must submit a letter of support from their Principal Investigator with their application to USF.

Compensation

As an instructor at USF, you will be hired as part-time (adjunct) faculty with no benefits. Pay for a lab instructor position is estimated at $4202 for the semester.  Pay for a lecturer position is estimated at $7520 for the semester.  If you would like to teach a lab course in lieu of your UCSF teaching assistant requirement, UCSF requires that you teach as a volunteer.

For International Students and Scholars

Note: International students/postdocs are advised to contact the UCSF International Students and Scholars Office (http://isso.ucsf.edu/) to determine eligibility for a paid part-time teaching position outside of UCSF under your particular visa. USF cannot assist with visa issues. International scholars on a J1 visa must submit a letter of support from their Principal Investigator with their application to USF and follow-up immediately with their ISSO officer to let them know of their application.
