Overview
This workshop introduces students and postdocs to the assessment, communication negotiation, and interpersonal skills required to build and maintain a high functioning relationship with a research mentor.
We'll discuss how factors ranging from role conflict, training, work style preferences, power differentials and unconscious bias can affect every professional relationship, and give you evidence-based criteria to assess the 'health' of your relationship. Participants will identify areas to focus on, brainstorm which tactics from four overarching strategies will be most effective when working with their research mentor, practice language and approaches grounded in their own professional identity, and discuss how to engage and find support in their wider community to respond proactively when they think their relationship and training is off-track.
Professional relationships are living things - come and join your peers in an interactive and thought-provoking session to intentionally cultivate yours!
