How do I get people to contact me on LinkedIn?

Ask a Career Consultant

Hi there! Every week, the Career Development Team for Researchers at the Office of Career and Professional Development answers an anonymized career development question from the UCSF community. You can also visit the archive of all of our past columns. To submit your own question, [email protected] with the subject line 'ASKOCPD.'

An early-stage postdoc asks-
I’ve been on LinkedIn for 6 months, but no one is contacting me (except for a bot that wants me to upgrade to premium). What should I add to my profile so more people will reach out to me?

Good news – getting passively contacted is not really the best use of LinkedIn (at least for now)! It’s actually the other way around. LinkedIn’s best use for you right now will be to help you find people who are doing what you want to do so you can understand their career path and talk with them. All you really need to do is make sure your key information is up to date (see our checklist on our website). This way, people will get a good idea of who you are when they look you up, which is mostly likely in response to you reaching out to them.
